Power outage at Willis Tower leaves building looking ‘disappointed,’ just like everyone else in 2020

Chicago’s skyline looked downright ominous Tuesday night.

One of the city’s iconic buildings, Willis Tower, was completely black — darkened by a power outage caused by a flood in the tower’s basement following the record-breaking rain the city experienced Sunday and Monday.

Chicagoans who noticed that their beloved “Sears Tower” had lost its twinkling lights were quick to comment on social media that they found the whole thing “creepy.”

Have you seen the creepy pictures of Sears Tower sans lights? Flooding knocked out power to the building. Also, I like that people still call it the Sears Tower. Which reminds me, I need to stop at Hooks on the way home from work today. pic.twitter.com/phspRyfVGl

It appears that major flooding last Sunday caused a building-wide power outage at Chicago's iconic 1,450 ft.-tall Willis Tower (aka Sears Tower), which has since loomed ominously over the city's nighttime skyline as a black-souled metaphor for the United States in the year 2020. pic.twitter.com/lKSh9mXe30

Others noticed that the lightless tower looked like it had a face, and thought it gave the impression of a disappointed robot, who’s just as done with 2020 as the rest of us.

The power went out @ Sears Tower and now it looks like some GD robot about to wreak havoc upon Chicago, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if that actually happened. pic.twitter.com/wsUMZ9nhzl

I’ll never get this image of the disappointed sears tower out of my head pic.twitter.com/5xEuMBQqXo

Some said the Willis Tower looked like something out of a video game.

But there was one take we can all agree with: The images provided some much-needed comedic relief amid the disastrous flooding Chicago saw early this week and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Everyone realizing that the sears tower has a face is the only comedic thing that has happened this year pic.twitter.com/oIg54AXvpa
