Power cut Edinburgh: Parts of capital left in darkness amid huge blackout

Locals were hit with a huge blackout affecting much of Edinburgh and surrounding areas on Sunday evening (February 7).

Mobile internet was also affected by the power cut, according to affected residents.

Scottish Power said they became aware of the unplanned incident at 9:11pm affecting a number of postcodes across Edinburgh and parts of the Lothians.

The power cut is understood to also have extended into parts of the borders and limited areas of Fife.

Street and traffic lights were affected, as well as internet.

Parts of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders were also affected, with people taking to social media to ask what had happened.

Locals took to social media to share images of their house lit by candle, whilst others worried that it may have affected local hospitals.

One concerned local contacted Edinburgh Live to report a possible fire, however it turned out to be the glow of candles and house fires and a group making koftas on Middle Meadow Walk amid the blackout.

A resident wrote: "Felt like the end of the world... No phone signal and we were left looking out the window wondering what was going on... How did we all cope before when Internet and mobile phone never existed."

Another local added: "It feels like the end of days."

Edinburgh author Ian Rankin tweeted: "40-minute power cut stretching from Edinburgh to Peebles. Spent 35 of those minutes finding torch and adding fresh batteries..."

While another local resident on Twitter added: Power cut over entirety of Edinburgh, so street was in creepy darkness then I got a notification on my phone saying mobile web had been turned off by my provider. Legit thought the apocalypse had finally started."

Another joked: "Right. That will be a battery radio, a gas lamp and candles on order then."

A statement from Scottish Power said power was estimated to return by 11:15pm, but most areas had power returned before 10pm.

You can get updates on the power cut on the Scottish Power website.

They also tweeted: "We are sorry about the powercut this evening we have a large number of customers off over a widespread area. Our engineers will try to remotely get your power back on, we are also dispatching engineers. We hope to have the power back on by 11:15."

Later they added: "Supplies have been restored to customers affected by #POWERCUT #Edinburgh #Lothians. If your power is not back on please check and reset your trip switches. Thank you for your patience today."
