Power bosses apologise following late-night Kilmarnock explosion

Scottish Power bosses have apologised after a late-night explosion woke up residents on a Kilmarnock estate.

People living on the new-build John Walker development, just off Western Road, were woken suddenly by a loud bang and a huge flash of light just after 1am last Friday morning.

The mysterious event was captured on a number of residents’ CCTV with footage showing the dark night sky lighting up for a few seconds before fading away again.

Many residents reported hearing a loud bang followed by a bright light.

Some theories suggested that the explosion could have been a power generator or an electrical transformer.

A number of homes lost power following the incident.

One resident said: “I was cleaning up the house and was just about to go to bed.

“All of a sudden I heard this loud bang and the lights flickered throughout the house.

“It was only after I saw other residents talking online that I realised that it was an explosion of some kind.

“It was quite frightening for that time of the morning.

“Someone suggested that an electrical transformer may have blown up.”

A Scottish Power spokeswoman told the Standard that the incident was the result of a “high voltage underground cable fault.”

The spokeswoman added: “Power was restored to properties in less than an hour.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

For two days after the incident, a considerable number of workers were spotted at the site of the explosion, trying to resolve the issue.
