BENGALURU: The pourakarmikas (civic workers) — who had been sitting on indefinite dharna — have withdrawn their protest after Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday instructed the municipal administration department to commence the process of granting permanent employment status to the civic workers in three months.
Bommai also directed the department to form a committee to look into this demand and file a report on the same in three months.
With this, 26,349 workers, currently under the direct payment system, will get employed as permanent staffers of corporations across the state.
Although he had made similar statements during a meeting held at his home office Krishna on July 1, many of his statements were omitted from the minutes of the meeting, upsetting the civic workers union.
The union leaders and civic workers demanded officials to include a statement that mentioned the deadline.
Following the demand, the CM office released new minutes on Monday after which the workers called off the protest.
The government has now given in-principle approval for their demand.
The agitators had been sitting on dharna for four days due to which door-to-door collection was taken.
The residents were throwing garbage, both solid and wet waste, at blackspots.
Umesh Shetty, BJP member and former councilor of Govindaraja Nagar ward, said waste collection and segregation was hit badly during the protest and wastes were thrown outside.
He said Vijayanagara, Attiguppe and J P Nagar areas were the worst hit.
