Poundland to take on 1,200 staff for Christmas and won't be opening on Boxing Day

Poundland is recruiting around 1,200 staff members to work across its stores ahead of the busy Christmas period.

The temporary shop floor roles will end on Christmas Eve, though some people may be taken on permanently where positions are available, the retailer has said. Simon Wells, Poundland & Dealz’ people director, added: "The extra recruits will help us make sure that our stores are great places to work and shop at the busiest time of year."

The firm has also announced that for the third year in a row all its stores will be closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to give staff members a well-deserved break. And as a thank you for their hard work, all 18,000 members of the Poundland and Dealz team will each receive a £25 voucher to spend in store between December and January.

In addition, their regular staff discount will double from 10% to 20% during November. Mr Wells added: "We really appreciate how hard colleagues work during the year and are closing the stores on the extra days over Christmas and New Year so they enjoy a well-deserved break with friends and family. The vouchers and extra discounts are our way of saying thank-you and we know they’ll be appreciated."

Customers can check their local store opening times over the Christmas period on the Poundland website.
