Poundland to open its first convenience stores this weekend - starting in two towns

Poundland is launching its first ever convenience stores this weekend, promising shoppers the luxury of local without the premium price tag.

The new stores will be smaller than its regular branches and will open in towns, as well as residential and urban neighbourhoods.

Poundland Local prices will be identical to its larger stores, and will sell items from its core ranges including groceries, snacks and household products.

Shoppers will also find health and beauty items, as well as batteries, toys, stationery and homeware products.

But there will also be wider range of certain items in Poundland Local, including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen food, and an extended range of bread and morning goods.

Shoppers will also find beer, wines and spirits, hot pies and pasties, vaping products, nappies and formula milk and Camelot lottery tickets and scratch cards.

The first two Poundland Local stores will open this weekend in Kendray, in South Yorkshire, and Hornsea, in East Yorkshire.

Both shops, which used to be Fultons Foods outlets, will open from 7am to 9am and employ 24 people in total.

Poundland Local stores will follow the same coronavirus safety measures as other shops, with customers expected to wear face masks and follow social distancing.

Poundland hasn’t said if it is currently planning more convenience stores under its new format.

Poundland transformation and retail director Austin Cooke said: “The launch of Poundland Local is a really exciting development and we hope customers are as excited as we are.

“While our Local format will have the ranges customers would expect in a neighbourhood store, they won’t have to pay more for that doorstep convenience.”
