Poundland to close shops on Boxing Day and New Year's Day as it doubles staff gift

Poundland is the latest retailer to confirm its stores will stay shut on Boxing Day this year.

The discounter will also close its shops on New Year’s Day so staff can spend more time with family and friends.

Its shops will be shut on Christmas Day as normal.

Poundland has confirmed as well that it will double the value of its Christmas voucher for its workers, giving every colleague £50 to spend.

Workers received £25 from the company last year.

There are 18,000 Poundland employees in the UK, with around 800 shops in total.

Poundland shops are typically open from 9am or 10am, until 6pm or 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and then 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

The discounter kept its doors shut on Boxing Day and New Year's Day last year as well.

The announcement from Poundland comes after Home Bargains also confirmed it won’t be open on Boxing Day or New Year's Day.

Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, M&S and Aldi have also said they’ll keep stores shut on December 26.

Boxing Day is typically one of the busiest times for retail workers as customers flock to the shops to pick up sale bargains.

But some shops are choosing to stay following a difficult year with the coronavirus crisis.

Barry Williams, Poundland’s managing director said: “At the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, we were the first retailer to commit to giving all our colleagues a well-earned rest at Christmas 2020 by keeping stores closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

“They deserve the same in 2021 and at our Christmas conference today in Manchester, we’ve shared that good news.

“Throughout the last 18 months, our Colleagues have been heroes – quietly turning up to work to serve their communities right across the UK and Ireland.

“By closing on Boxing Day and New Year’ Day, we recognise that service and the chance to spend extra time with their families.”
