Poundland is continuing to undergo huge structural changes which will see almost 50 stores close this month.
Gordon Brothers, a US investment firm that once owned Laura Ashley, purchased the chain earlier this summer from the Pepco Group and has overseen changes which includes the closure of 49 outlets this month.
Over 1,000 jobs could be at risk of the brand’s store closures.
Poundland retail director Darren MacDonald said: “When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future.”
He added that Poundland “remains a key player in UK discount retail, with millions of customers annually and a well-loved brand and proposition.”
In addition to the store closures, Gordon Brothers' restructuring plans include negotiating rent reductions at specific store locations.
Later this year, Poundland's frozen and digital distribution centre in the South Yorkshire village of Darton will also close.
As a result, supermarkets will carry far fewer cold food items and no frozen goods. By early 2026, the new owners also intend to close the chain's distribution base in the West Midlands town of Bilston.
Additional cost-cutting strategies include expanding the chain's womenswear and seasonal collections and ceasing to sell things online.
However, the High Court still needs to approve these amendments later this month.
After experiencing declining revenue, Poundland's former owners, Pepco, put it up for sale in March. In comparison to the previous year, the company recorded a 6.5 per cent decline in the chain's revenue, which fell to £830 million for the six months ending in March.
Pepco attributed the drop to “extremely difficult trading conditions” as the franchise was having trouble selling all of its products.
