Poundland statement after rumours of new store in Wirral

Budget high street store Poundland has issued a statement following rumours of a new branch in Wirral.

There are whispers of a new Poundland at the Bidston Moss retail park, also known as the Junction One Retail Park as it is just off the first approach for the M53.

The site already has a Home Bargains, Aldi, Marks & Spencer, B&Q and a Halfords, but some people believe a Poundland is about to join the list.

We asked the chain about their plans, and while they would not be drawn into an answer, they did say they were "looking at opportunities".

A spokesperson said: "Wirral is a great location for Poundland and we're looking at opportunities. As soon as we have any news to share, we will."

If a Poundland were to open up shop at the retail park, it wouldn't be the only new addition.

In October last year, an application was submitted to Wirral Council for McDonald's to be built on the site in a multi-million investment and the promise of 65 new jobs.

Adam Brand, senior acquisitions surveyor at McDonald’s, said: “This site represents a multi-million-pound investment in Bidston Moss and will deliver up to 65 new, local jobs.

“We know how well-connected this location is, being just off Junction 1 of the M53, and our restaurant will be ideally placed to serve local people and visitors alike.

“We are confident this detailed proposal will provide added competition and choice for customers whilst being mindful and considerate of our neighbours and residents in Bidston Moss.”

But some have been worried it could cause 'pandemonium' in an already busy retail park.

Chris Forager said: “Seems stupid considering you can drive to at least four or five others in less than 10 minutes from that location - Liscard, Upton, Junction 3, Birkenhead and Rock Retail.”

Ian Maddocks added: “Sort the entrance and exit to the retail park first, it's a nightmare. Surprised nothing has ever been done it's so bad to get into only one way to get in.”

David Humphreys said: "Access in and out can be a nightmare and seeing how bad the other drive throughs can be I can predict pandemonium."

While the plan was opposed by many, not everyone was against the proposition of a new business in the borough.

Jamie Harper said that a new McDonald's is 'great news'.

He said: “More jobs, great news. The empty sites have been there for years - not sure why people are moaning.”

Others welcomed the branch which will be more accessible for locals who currently have to travel to Liscard or Upton for McDonald's.
