Poundland on Boxing Day and New Year's Day closures this year

Poundland will be closing on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, the store has confirmed.

The budget retailer made the decision back in April and has said it is "delighted" so many other stores are joining them in closures over the festive period as it reaffirms its position.

Poundland is usually open on Boxing Day, so the closure will give colleagues an extra break alongside Christmas Day.

It comes as Asda announced it would be closing on Boxing Day, while M&S recently reversed its decision to stay open.

Home Bargains will close for the third year in a row, while Aldi will also remain shut on Boxing Day.

Poundland, which is an essential retailer, is also giving employees an extra week's holiday next year as a thank you to staff who continued to work throughout the pandemic.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: "We're delighted so many other retailers are joining us in giving hard-working retail colleagues more time with their families.

"It was already obvious to us back in April that our store colleagues deserved a massive thank you for their fantastic efforts this year – that's why we told colleagues then that they could have an extra week's holiday and we'd be closed on Boxing Day and News Year's Day.

"Our colleagues have worked so hard to provide an essential service to their local communities and fully deserve the extra time off to spend with family."
