Poundland comes under fire from customers for promoting 'sexist' football T-shirts

Poundland has angered some of its shoppers over football t-shirts they say are sexist.

The brand shared images of the tops for young girls on on its Facebook page, some of which featured the messages "future WAG" and "goal digger" on the front.

Beneath the images were posted the words: "Get goal-ready for this evening's game!" the post read before asking: "What are your score predictions?"

But instead of answering the question, followers of the page hit out at the contents of the T-shirts, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Images of T-shirt's were posted on the brand's main Facebook page (PA)

They accused the store chain of misrepresenting women and girls, saying the brand should be ‘ashamed’.

"What the hell is this sexist nonsense? Poundland, do you have any women, or men with daughters, on your product purchasing/marketing team? If so, they should be ashamed of themselves," said one.

Another shopper remarked: "What a horrible horrible message to be giving to women and girls...it’s 2021 you know!"

"2021 and this is still what we get?" a third fumed.

A fourth said: "You need to change that future wag to future baller! What century are you in Poundland? Pathetic."

Others, however, saw the items of clothing, images of which were posted ahead of England and Scotland's Euros match last Friday, as harmless and simply ‘a bit of fun’, claiming critics were overreacting.

"Surely I'm not the only one that isn't offended by these. It's just a bit of fun, if you don't like them then don't buy them," a comment read.

Another said: "The amount of people offended over a t-shirt on here is crazy."

"Nothing wrong being a WAG in fact you women are demoralising women by slating them.... look into these women’s net worth and businesses they do pretty well for themselves and are self sufficient. So they married a successful man good on them," a third argued.

A spokesperson for Poundland said the clothing range wasn't a new addition to the store, adding: "It’s stock that was available during the 2018 World Cup in Russia and while they’ve been popular, we appreciate the feedback."
