Sterling rose slightly after MPs voted to take a no-deal Brexit off the table.

MPs have voted to ensure the UK cannot crash out of the European Union without an agreement in place with Brussels, in another dramatic night for Theresa May’s government.

As news broke of the decision made in the Commons, Sterling surged by 0.85 per cent against the euro.

At 7pm, before the result of MPs' votes emerged, the pound was worth €1.67, having fallen from €1.69 earlier in the day.

By 7.25pm, when MPs passed Amendment A, which rejects leaving the EU without a deal at any time or any circumstances, there was a sharp rise to €1.72.

This was Sterling’s highest point of the day, as it declined and increased as MPs cast further votes.

They also voted against an amendment to extend Article 50 until 22 May. The amendment failed by 210 votes.

More votes will follow on Thursday on whether to authorise Mrs May to request an extension of the two-year Article 50 negotiation process.
