Pound soars after poll shows Tories are on track for a healthy majority

The pound jumped to a seven-month high against the euro today after a crucial poll showed the Tories are on track for a healthy majority.

The much-anticipated YouGov poll, which foresaw a hung parliament in 2017, predicts a comfortable 68-seat majority for the Conservative party in next month’s election.

The Conservatives are on track to win 359 seats, with Labour down to 211, the poll said.

In early trading the pound shot to $1.2951, before cooling to $1.2932. It also rose to €1.1742 against the euro.

However, the pound failed to break through the crucial $1.30 mark, something traders said would not take place until after the election in two weeks’ time.

Despite the markets and business being mostly anti-Brexit, analysts said the certainty offered by a majority government meant the country could move forward.
