Potholes on Craigs Road in Dumfries not to be repaired until July 2021

Drivers in Dumfries will have to suffer a problem road for at least another month.

The near-mile long stretch of Gillbrae and Craigs Road is in a “shocking state” according to Nith ward councillor Malcolm Johnstone who raised a complaint last month.

Mr Johnstone said: “The council is planning to start work in early July which is very disappointing to be honest.

“I asked if there was any way some of the worst areas could receive a patch job until the work was done.

“I was told that the defects aren’t deep enough to warrant that.

“I’m sure there will be plenty of drivers in Georgetown and Calside that won’t be happy to hear that.

“This road needs to be fixed urgently.

“But the start of July doesn’t seem urgent to me.”

Last month The Standard received complaints about the road and the Conservative councillor said it was “impossible” to drive along the road without hitting a pothole.

Drivers have been seen swerving across the road to avoid hitting the worst defects.

It is understood the Covid-19 pandemic delayed urban road works due to fears over social distancing for workers.

Mr Johnstone said: “This has been highlighted for a long time. The council knows about this issue.

“It was in the capital programme last year for repairs so it’s not a new problem.

“There are two or three parts which are the worst areas which could be patched until July.

“I understand that they didn’t want work happening during the pandemic for social distancing reasons but when restrictions were lifted this should’ve been good to go.”
