Pothole so old locals celebrate its birthday - with a caterpillar cake

A pothole that's not been repaired for two years was given a birthday cake to mark the milestone.

Locals recently marked the birthday of a hole in the road on the R340 in Connemara, western Ireland.

The big day was also celebrated on social media by a protest group working to highlight the neglect of the community's roads.

Connemara Roads re-shared the image two years after it was originally uploaded - to show how long the local council had taken to address the issue.

The kid-favourite birthday treat was pictured with the caption: "Pot hole on the R340 celebrates 2nd birthday today".

Dozens of local residents, likely motorists who have driven past the crack, liked the post.

The original image was taken in 2019 but it was reposted by the N59 Action Campaign ahead of a visit from a politician next week.

The page shares images of potholes, rips and tears on the road on a regular basis.

Local campaigners spray them with paint to highlight dangers to other motorists.

Earlier this year a teacher slammed her local council after a pothole that ripped open two tires on her car was considered "not dangerous enough," for her to claim damages.

Jeanette East, 62, incurred £500 worth of damage to car when she hit the 23ft-long, 3ins-deep crevice in Dedham, Essex.

Jeanette, who described the pothole as 'an accident waiting to happen', lodged a complaint with Essex County Council following the incident in April, but was sent packing when the damage to the road was deemed not dangerous by an inspector.

Now, the disgruntled driver is considering taking the issue before a small claims court.

Speaking to Suffolk Live, she said: "The unevenness of its surface along that length is lethal for walkers, cyclists and motorcyclists; they just won’t see it.
