Potential venue identified for RB Leipzig vs Liverpool as Reds banned from entering Germany

Liverpool could play the first-leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with RB Leipzig in Hungary.

The Bundesliga outfit are under pressure to find a venue after the Reds were prohibited from entering Germany.

A travel ban has been imposed by the German government as they look to contain the spread of the current pandemic.

Professional sport teams are not exempt from the rule meaning the clash cannot take place at the Red Bull Arena.

UEFA were conscious that such a situation could arise at the start of the season and identified "safe" stadiums - one of which was the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Leipzig, as the home team, are required to find a venue, but are up against the clock.

A stadium in London has been contacted as an alternative, reports the Daily Mail.

If they cannot secure a stadium to host the game then UEFA will have the final say and the game will be played in the Hungarian capital.

The Reds, who won the Champions League in 2019, are due to play Leipzig on February 16 before hosting them at Anfield on March 10.

The Puskas Arena is in line to host several games in this summer's European Championships and was the venue for the UEFA Super Cup back in September.

UEFA are willing to delay fixtures affected by travel restrictions across the globe, but the latest possible date to finish last 16 games is April 2.

Germany's travel ban could also affect Manchester City's game with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Pep Guardiola's side are due to play the away leg of their last 16 tie on February 24 so it depends on whether the ban is extended.
