MUMBAI: A 47-year-old man who posed as a potential tenant and stole gold ornaments from a woman at Dahisar was tracked down by the police to Pune and arrested. The accused, Rajesh Khanvilkar, is a resident of Kankavli in Sindhudurg. The stolen jewellery weighing 100 gms and worth Rs 3.5 lakh was recovered.
The complainant is a 58-year-old homemaker from Bandra. She received a Facebook request from Khanvilkar earlier this year. Khanvilkar explained that he was looking to rent a flat in Mumbai. He claimed that he was living in Goa. The woman agreed to arrange a rental accommodation for him and the two exchanged phone numbers. On November 27, Khanvilkar came down to Dahisar to meet the woman. They were having a cup of tea when the woman decided to use the restroom. She took off her gold ornaments before going to the restroom. Khanvilkar pocketed the ornaments and fled. On returning from the restroom, the woman realised that she had been looted and approached the police.
Investigators checked footage from 12 cameras and call data records of seven phone numbers before they tracked down Khanvilkar to Pune's Bund Garden area. He was taken into custody. Police learnt that Khanvilkar used to live in Pune two years ago.
