Potential Sunderland investor Mark Campbell spotted at League One play-off final vs Charlton

Sunderland suffered a huge blow on Sunday thanks to a 2-1 League One play-off final defeat to Charlton but it has been revealed that US investor Mark Campbell was present at Wembley.

Sky Sports made the revelation during commentary in the clash as Sunderland edge closer to a potential takeover this summer.

Campbell has been previously linked with a potential move to takeover Sunderland and was sat alongside owner Stewart Donald at the play-off final.

The presence of Campbell suggests developments could be possible in the coming days but the play-off final defeat will play a huge part in the club's future.

Campbell has reportedly been the frontman of a consortium looking to take over the club.

As Sunderland Executive Director Charlie Methven has previously said, though, the club's future direction will be drastically different in League One. He did, however, explain that the Black Cats are well prepared for staying in League One.

Methven explained ahead of the play-off final: “There are two different scenarios. We have been trying to prepare for both of those so when the season comes to an end the club is in a position where it does what it needs to do.

“There are options on the table and they are good ones. We are pretty confident in Sunderland’s future now."
