Potential Seahawks draft target Montez Sweat has heart condition

The Seattle Seahawks, if they keep their first-round pick in next month’s draft, seem likely to use it on an edge defender. One of the many targets they could consider is Mississippi State edge defender Montez Sweat.

Sweat played well in the Senior Bowl and had a very strong NFL combine, however, which has many pundits moving him up draft boards into the top-10 range and out of Seattle’s reach.

However, medical testing done at the combine revealed a pre-existing heart condition, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, which could impact Sweat’s draft outlook.

In the past, prospects have been sent home from the combine because of medical issues. The fact that Sweat was allowed to participate is probably a good sign, although a pre-existing heart condition is certainly something that could scare teams away.

Seattle is not known to have specific interest in Sweat, although they — along with many other teams — will certainly look to acquire more information about his condition before considering him in the draft.

This could cause him to slide back down to Seattle’s range at pick No. 21.

Should the Seahawks decide to keep their pick, Sweat could make an incredible pairing with Frank Clark on the edge.

As long as he is healthy.
