Potential Rangers vs St Johnstone fixture window comes to light after Scottish Cup exits

It was due to be played in October but a date for Rangers vs St Johnstone may have finally have been found.

The Ibrox side's Europa League run has meant it has been impossible to find a free midweek to play the game after it was initially postponed for the Betfred Cup semi-final.

But after a dismal run of domestic form continued with defeat in the Scottish Cup quarter final for Rangers, the SPFL may finally be able to mark it in their calendar.

St Johnstone also crashed out at the same stage of the tournament and now there's an opening for the game to be played.

There is still potential issues though, because the free weekend falls on the same days as the Scottish Cup semi-finals - with both fixtures set to take place at Hampden on April 11 and 12.

It's unlikely that police would allow Rangers and Celtic to play in Glasgow on the same day but it could be held on the same day as the Edinburgh derby, providing it's ratified by Scottish football's decision makers.

With both semi-finals live on TV, the SFA could arrange for the Edinburgh derby to be a midday kick-off, as is likely.

The SPFL could then decide to have Rangers vs St Johnstone taking place at 3pm at Ibrox as it isn't a game that has been earmarked for TV coverage.

There could be other options if Rangers crash out of the Europa League but this would allow a Saturday 3pm kick-off which are becoming more a rarity with each passing season.
