'Potential leg breaker' - Graeme Souness and Alan Smith react to Isaac Hayden's red card against Leicester

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has branded Isaac Hayden's tackle on Dennis Praet a leg breaker.

Hayden was shown a straight a red card  for the tackle which happened two minutes before the interval at the King Power.

The midfielder reacted angrily to being given his matching orders with Magpies skipper Jamaal Lascelles having to escort his team-mate away from the situation.

But speaking at half-time on Sky Sports, Souness was left in no doubt that referee Craig Pawson made the correct call.

He said: "There is no one who can defend that, he is endangering an opponent.

"He's off the ground, he's caught the ball, but he has straight legged him.

"That is a leg breaker, isn't it?

"He properly caught him there and it looks like the guy has got away with it.

"But you can't defend that. It is a sending off all day long.

"Yes he gets the ball, but he's making sure he is protecting himself after he has got the ball. He's straight legging him and his studs are up.

"It is a sending off."

While Alan Smith, co-commentating on the game, also believes Hayden deserved to be shown a red card.

"He steamed in on the follow-through, he certainly got the ball, I think, but the follow-through was dangerous.

"He feels hard done by because he knows he's got the ball. It's not great.

"That is a very dangerous challenge. He can't any complaints with that potential leg breaker.

"He knows the rule these days, that kind of challenge just isn't allowed."
