Potential Giants target, Logan Ryan, praises Joe Judge

With NFL free agency scheduled to kickoff this week, barring any setbacks or delays due to the coronavirus, the New York Giants will be seeking veteran help in the secondary and former Rutgers star Logan Ryan could be on their radar.

Ryan played for the New Patriots from 2013-2016 and knows Giants head coach Joe Judge, and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham very well. Judge was the Pats’ special teams coach while Ryan was in Foxborough.

“I love special teams coaches as head coaches because they know their roster well; they coach every single player,” Ryan told the New York Post. “I’m excited for Joe Judge. I’m excited for his opportunity. I would say that he’s a players’ coach, he knows his players well, and he’s gonna be very demanding of them as well. He was my assistant special teams coach when I came in, so he coached me as an assistant coach, and he worked his way up.”

That being said, would that attract Ryan to the Giants this spring?

“I know New Jersey well, obviously,” the Berlin native said. “I’ve lived there before, and I love the great state of New Jersey, so there’s a lot of good food there… I’ve lived in New Jersey before, and like I said, there’s great food there like Nashville. I’ll be close to my mom and dad, but right now, man, I’m a Tennessee Titan, and I’m excited to be one.”

That won’t be true come Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET unless the league delays free agency. Ryan will be a free agent and the Giants are expected to kick the tires on him. He is also looking forward to the process. This will be his second foray into the marketplace. In 2017, the Tennessee Titans inked Ryan to a three-year, $30 million deal which expires this week.

“Excited,” he said. “I’m part of a player rep here, and players have fought for free agency, and it’s a strength that a player could use. Who wouldn’t want to go back to their job and ask for more money if deserving? Not enough players get a chance to go through it, get to free agency, and I view it as an exciting time and not a stressful one.”

The Giants won’t be giving him a monster deal, so he shouldn’t be too excited. But he’s only 29 and could still warrant a pretty lucrative deal this spring. The Giants, with so many needs, likely won’t get into a bidding war for Ryan.
