Potential boost for Nottingham Forest's hopes of keeping star man Matty Cash

Sheffield United have turned their attention to Swansea City defender Connor Roberts as their quest for a right-back goes on, reports say.

Chris Wilder’s Blades have already seen a £10m bid for Nottingham Forest star Matty Cash rejected, with the Reds understood to want nearer £15m, and now the Sun claim the Premier League side are tracking Roberts.

The Welsh international has enjoyed a fine season with the Swans, but following their play-off semi-final defeat to Brentford, boss Steve Cooper will likely have to free up some space on his wage bill, with the 24-year-old valued at around £6m, significantly less than Forest want for Cash.

Cash’s future is likely to be story of the summer at the City Ground, with the influential right-back attracting interest from a host of clubs, including Burnley and Italian giants AC Milan.

One of the stars of Sabri Lamouchi’s inaugural season in English football, Cash proved himself a key part of a campaign which looked certain to secure a play-off place, until a disastrous final 20 minutes of the campaign against Stoke City.

Meanwhile, the same report claims Forest’s Championship rivals are pondering a bid for ex-Reds defender Daniel Ayala, following his departure from Middlesbrough.

The Spaniard is a free agent after opting against extending his deal at the Riverside Stadium, but his wage demands, reported to be in the region of £1m per year, render that deal unlikely at this stage.
