Potatoes, toothpaste and turnip knife among weirdest Xmas presents our readers have received

It's the thought that counts after all.

Christmas is a time for sharing gifts, eating turkey and spending time with family (socially distanced and in limited numbers this year).

However it's also a time where you see people rushing around the shops in a last-minute flap in order to find gifts for their nearest and dearest.

It's Christmas Eve and the clock is approaching 5pm – that sort of pressure can do very strange things to people, and result in some very strange gifts being bought, often from a roadside service station. Because nothing says 'Merry Christmas' quite like a brand-new pair of wiper blades.

The uber-prepared among you reading this won't be able to identify with what I'm saying, however I've no doubt there will be many of you who know exactly what I'm talking about.

So with that in mind we asked our readers to tell us the strangest gift they've ever received over the festive period.

And there were some very interesting responses.

"My dad once bought my mum Val Powell a manual for her car" - Jillian Telfer

"A used eyeshadow" - Ash Douglas

"4lbs Jersey potatoes" - Nancy Grant

"Tube of Gibbs Sr toothpaste" - Marty Bryce

"A sack of marbles when I was 15. Mother dear. I've since lost them in more ways than one" - Mikey Barrie

"Fridge eggs - air freshner for your fridge" - Laura Morrison

Referring to the image at the top of the article, Megan Cameron posted: "This. It's for cutting the ends off a turnip when it's been pulled from the field (weirdest but also best) - Megan Cameron
