Potato milk set to hit supermarket shelves next year but shoppers divided over latest vegan option

Potatoes are set to be a popular food trend for 2022, but in a different form than we're used to.

Consumers will be able to enjoy the vegetable in a way that is neither mashed, boiled, baked, roasted or fried.

Instead, the humble potato will appear on supermarket shelves in a new iteration: milk.

Potato milk is the unlikely food hit predicted to take shoppers by storm next year.

That's according to UK supermarket chain Waitrose, who cite TikTok as having a major influence on the food and drinks we now consume.

In its food and drink report for 2021 to 2022, the retailer lists seven future trends it expects to see in the next few months.

Among these is potato milk, with the report stating: "We’ve seen the popularity of soy, almond, oat and pea milk in recent years.

"Now it’s the turn of potato milk. Low in sugar and saturated fat, it’s set to dominate coffee shop menus in the coming months."

The other trends listed are: 'The big breakfast', 'umami', 'climatarianism', 'rewilding', 'pre-batched bottled cocktails', and 'borderless freestyle'.

Waitrose is so confident that the vegan drink will be popular among shoppers that it will stock the Swedish potato milk brand Dug from February.

However, shoppers are divided over whether they would be willing to try the dairy alternative.

One person said: "Where does it end though, what are we prepared not to milk."

A second stated: "I'll stay with my almond milk, thanks."

A third chimed in: "Potato milk sounds like the most disgusting excuse for a vegetable drink yet."

While one person added: "Give it a try, but don't hold up much hope for it."

Someone else joked: "So potatoes are milked through their.....spudders?"
