England international Jill Scott has joked that the decision to postpone Euro 2021 until 2022 could affect her retirement plans.
Last month, the coronavirus pandemic forced Uefa to delay this summer’s men’s tournament, Euro 2020, by a year, meaning next summer’s planned Euro 2021 is likely to also be pushed back.
At 33, Scott is aware she doesn’t have many international tournaments left ahead of her, and if Euro 2021 is delayed – as is expected – it could end up being her last for England.
“I know it hasn’t been confirmed fully, but if that is the case, then I think we just have to try and turn everything into a positive where we can,” the Manchester City midfielder told BBC Sport.
“If you look at it that way, we have got an Olympics, a home Euros and then a World Cup, so what a three-year cycle that will be for women’s football.
“I think it will be good for the game – whether it’s next year or a year after.”
Scott admitted, however, that the postponement would “probably [be] a little bit worrying for the older players”.
The Football Association announced on Friday that the Women’s Super League season will not resume until “it is safe and appropriate to do so”.
