A postman has been "dressing silly" while delivering letters to people's homes to lift spirits during the coronavirus lockdown.

From Pocahontas to a pilot, Jon Matson, 39, has dressed up as an array of characters and is determined to keep his customers entertained while he delivers their mail.

He has been a postman in Jarrow in the North East for the last two-and-a-half years, and says he has got to know his customers personally.

After the Government ordered people to stay at home as a way of preventing the spread of Covid-19, Mr Matson soon noticed the impact the lockdown was having on people.

He told the Standard: "I noticed pretty much straight away how frightened people were and how the mood changed.

"I just thought I need to do something to lift people's spirits and to give them something to laugh about."

Over two weeks Mr Matson has worn eight different outfits including a Where's Wally ensemble and an Egyptian fancy dress outfit complete with make-up.

For his first shift wearing fancy dress Jon chose a red cheerleading outfit which resembled his red Royal Mail uniform.

"Not a lot of people noticed at first," said Jon. "And then I started hearing wolf whistles from further down the street and people began messaging their friends.

"It snowballed from there and the next day when I came out with my Little Bo Beep outfit, people were waiting to see what I was wearing.

"There isn't really any rhyme or reason to it, I just think what do what I want to be today and then wear that outfit."

Fortunately the father-of-two already had an extensive fancy dress wardrobe from outfits he had worn when taking part in the annual Boxing Day Swim.

He's also received donations from people who are supporting his fancy dressed themed deliveries.

Jon said: "The reaction has been beyond what I imagined.

"I thought I might get a few laughs but this has been seen around the world.

"There's far too much bad news out there and I think it's absolutely vital that people keep their spirits up."
