Postie punting Nicola Sturgeon 'ya wee dafty' painting on eBay for £270 - and he wants her to buy it

The artist behind a viral painting of Nicola Sturgeon reckons the First Minister should buy it.

David Crossland's unique piece of art with the writing "ya wee dafty" on it has been made famous on social media after his mate Laurie Pitt stuck it up on eBay for £270.

The 31-year-old postman, originally from Nottingham, decided to paint the SNP leader when he was living in Glasgow during the referendum for Scottish Independence.

After a leaflet of Sturgeon came through the door the former art student thought it would be a laugh to frame her.

David told the Record: "The leaflet came through the door and she was doing the same pose on it.

"We just had it sitting there but when I left Glasgow it ended up in some guy's studio and then when my mate was having a clear out he put it on eBay.

"I didn't even know it was on eBay until it ended up on Twitter."

David, who now lives in Leeds, has received some stick for the painting after his mate Laurie described it as a “lifelike rendition” of the First Minister.

The seller described the portrait sale as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and has listed the hand painted artwork for £270.

David said: "That's the funny thing though, on Twitter lots of anti-SNP folk have been commenting like, 'that would be perfect for a dart board'.

"But I never did it to hate on her on anything like that. It was just a bit of fun.

"I used to do a few different folk like Neil Lennon and Gary Hooper. That sort of thing.

"I did it mainly to just decorate the flat."

David has also painted Neil Lennon, left, and former Celtic striker Gary Hooper (David Crossland)

Postman David revealed he even delivered Sturgeon's ballot paper for the referendum back in 2014.

He said: "My manager sent me to the Uddingston office around that time and I actually delivered Nicola Sturgeon's ballet paper to her house.

"I saw her name and her husband's name and Googled it and it actually was her."

David joked: "Apparently the painting has had a bid on it already but I think Nicola should buy it herself.

"She could have it in the background of Zoom calls and stuff like that.

"Maybe I'll do a new one for Indy Ref 2."
