Meghan Markle is reflecting on how her identity has shifted since stepping back from royal life—and she admits she’s not quite sure how to define herself professionally anymore.
In a candid new interview with Fast Company, the Duchess of Sussex revealed her uncertainty about what title truly captures her multifaceted career today. “If I had to write a résumé, I don’t know what I would call myself,” Meghan said. “I think it speaks to this chapter many of us find ourselves in, where none of us are one note. But I believe all the notes I am playing are part of the same song.”
Her comments come just weeks after she rejected the commonly used “influencer” label in an interview with People magazine, saying, “I see myself as an entrepreneur and a female founder, and if the brand ends up influential, then that’s great.”
Since stepping down as a senior working member of the Royal Family in 2020 alongside her husband Prince Harry, Meghan has taken on a wide range of business ventures, embracing her independence outside the royal sphere.
Most recently, she has launched several new projects: a lifestyle series on Netflix titled With Love, Meghan, her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard (stylized as As Ever), and a podcast called Confessions of a Female Founder, which explores the personal journeys and challenges faced by women entrepreneurs.
Meghan’s remarks reflect a broader cultural conversation about how individuals—especially women—navigate professional identity in an increasingly diverse and fluid work landscape. Her journey from actress to duchess to entrepreneur and media creator shows how traditional labels often fall short in capturing the complexity of modern careers.
Despite criticism and relentless media scrutiny, Meghan continues to carve out her own space and voice in the business and creative world, choosing authenticity over conventional titles.
While she may not be able to pinpoint a single job title, Meghan seems to embrace the evolving nature of her identity. “All the notes I am playing are part of the same song,” she said—an apt metaphor for a woman redefining what it means to lead, influence, and create on her terms.
