An East Kilbride Post Office has been given a reprieve.
The Westwood Square branch – which is operated by SPAR – had been due to close at the end of the month.
While the SPAR store was to remain open they had decided not to continue to run the Post Office.
However, following discussions the PO say a decision by SPAR Scotland to withdraw from operating 18 Post Office branches – including Westwood – has been put on hold for now.
Councillor Collette Stevenson said: “This is great news for local service users, many of whom were disappointed in the original decision.
“I look forward to seeing further details in due course but I am pleased that this Post Office will remain for now and continue to meet the needs of local residents.”
A Post Office spokeswoman said: “The retail climate is extremely challenging, however, both SPAR Scotland and the Post Office are committed to working together to develop a commercially sustainable solution that maintains access to post office services for customers and businesses.
“Post Offices play an important role in the local community and we are committed to working together to find a permanent solution for these 18 branches.
“Some Post Offices have recently closed or are closing imminently, however, there are nearby alternative Post Office branches whilst we continue to look for replacement solutions.
“As part of our response to changes that are happening on the high street and in the retail and convenience sectors more broadly, the Post Office is also developing new branch formats and we hope to trial some of these at SPAR Scotland stores in the coming months to help us ensure that local communities can continue to access Post Office services.”
St Leonards Post Office closed at the end of last months due to RS McColls, where it was based, shutting up shop with the search on for a new operator.
