Police have not ruled out possible homicide over the death of a 54-year-old man at a Hunter tip at the weekend.
A post-mortem was conducted on the body of Shane Mears on Tuesday, with a police spokesperson only willing to say afterwards that the examination turned up multiple injuries.
Detectives are still appealing for information from the community about the incident, after no extra people - who are believed to have been at the secluded part of the dump at the same time the Cessnock man suffered his fatal injuries - have come forward.
Mr Mears and a friend, a 46-year-old man who has been helping police with their inquiries and is not considered a suspect, are believed to have sneaked into Cessnock Waste Management Centre via a bush track on Sunday afternoon.
They were near the scrap metal section of the dump after closing time when the incident occurred.
Police were called to the closed tip about 5pm after a report that a man had been critically injured.
There they found Mr Mears, who died at the scene.
He suffered extensive injuries, including to the head, the Newcastle Herald understands.
Detectives have set up Strike Force Nargal to investigate.
