Possible sightings of pair who jumped into croc-infested Mary River

The search for two people missing after jumping into crocodile-infested waters to allegedly avoid police in the Northern Territory has been scaled back amid possible sightings of the pair.

NT Police yesterday said they held "grave fears" for 19-year-old Caitlyn Munnich and 25-year-old Raphael Woodhouse.

Ms Munnich and Mr Woodhouse were travelling in a vehicle when they allegedly tried to avoid a roadblock, set up by police to check cars for drugs.

Police followed the car until it pulled up, and followed Ms Munnich, who is believed to be pregnant, and Mr Woodhouse into bushland.

Three other people were in the car at the time and have been assisting police with their enquiries.

The pair are thought to have jumped into the Mary River, a waterway known for its high number of saltwater crocodiles, to avoid police.

It was feared they may have been attacked by crocodiles, but there was a possibility they had left the river safely and deliberately chosen not to come forward because they were still trying to avoid police.

Police today said the search had been scaled back and members of the public said they had seen the missing pair.

"We have had a couple of really good sightings," an NT Police spokesman said.

"We haven't confirmed the sightings at the moment, but they were enough to scale back the search."

The Mary River is said to be home to the highest concentration of crocodiles in the Top End.
