Possible lockdown changes to expect if Delta cases continue to rise and spread

The resumption of indoor dining is to go ahead even with the Delta variant accounting for over 80% of cases with less than 60% of the adult population fully vaccinated.

Despite this, the reopening will continue, but Israel should be taken as a warning of what can happen if you open too much too fast.

They've had one of the most successful vaccine rollouts on the planet, which helped to drive down deaths and new infections in months previous.

Israel is a little over a month into a full reopening of society with no social distancing and no need to wear masks indoors.

The results of that have been startling.

Cases have shot up in recent weeks due to the much more infectious Delta variant which has resulted in the re-introduction of some restrictions.

Those restrictions include mandatory mask-wearing indoors and quarantine for all people flying into Israel.

If you look at new infection numbers, we're remarkably close to the levels seen in Israel. Most recently, they reported 718 new cases, while 783 were reported by NPHET on Wednesday.

The Delta variant also accounts for 90% of newly reported cases in Israel, while it's over 80% here.

Vaccination rates in Israel are of a similar level to Ireland as well.

Around 60% of the population has at least one dose of vaccine and Israel has also relied heavily upon the Pfizer vaccine, the same as Ireland.

Studies from Israel, however, show that the Pfizer jab isn't as efficacious against Delta as previous variants with estimates of around 60% from getting a symptomatic infection.

Pfizer/BioNTech is set to ask the US and European regulators for approval of a third booster shot six months after you've received your second.
