Positive update from World Health Organization on Ireland's Covid-19 situation

Ireland has been listed as just one of seven European countries that has seen a drop in seven day incidence rates.

Ireland's seven day rate has decreased by 36% compared to the previous week's data with genuine progress made since lockdown began.

24 other European countries saw a rise in their seven day incidence rates with lockdowns elsewhere now looking more likely.

And NPHET certainly agree that Ireland is headed in the right direction but it's too early to declare victory.

Speaking on Friday, Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said it was the first time in three months he was able to share positive news.

Lockdown Level 5 restrictions in full

He said: “The reproduction number is now close to 1.0 nationally. This is the first time in a number of weeks that we have been able to report positive indicators of the disease.

"However, our experience to date shows this type of progress is very fragile.

"We should take these positive signs as an indication our efforts are starting to work, the critical thing now is to keep it up, the virus will seek out any opportunity to spread; over the next weeks let’s make sure we don’t give it that opportunity, by driving R and case numbers as low as possible.”
