'Positive start' for talks over future of Kimberley leisure centre

Discussions over the future of Kimberley Leisure Centre have started.

The leisure centre is owned by the adjacent school, which told the coalition-controlled council in May that it wanted to pull out of the previous contract.

At the time, the chief executive of the trust which runs the school said the contract was no longer fit for purpose and did not serve Kimberley schools or residents well.

He also denied online rumours that the trust wanted to close the leisure centre to the public, and said the opposite was true.

Now, negotiations have started between Broxtowe Borough Council and East Midlands Education Trust over the future of Kimberley Leisure Centre, with representatives from each organisation holding their first meeting on Friday June 26.

Today (Tuesday, June 30), the leader of the council, Milan Radulovic who represents the Eastwood Hill top issued a joint statement with the Chief Executive of East Midlands Education Trust, Rob McDonough.

The trust runs several schools in the town, and owns the leisure centre.

The joint statement reads: “We are pleased that negotiations got off to a very positive start with agreement reached that we will work together to maintain leisure provision for local people in the north of the borough.

“We will continue to work together amicably over the coming weeks on a proposal which meets the needs of our individual organisations and the local community.”
