A positive case of COVID-19 has sent a Canberra public school into isolation on the first week of face-to-face classes.

Ainslie School parents were notified on Thursday afternoon that a confirmed case visited the school campus on Monday October 25 from 9am to 3pm and Tuesday October 26 from 9am to 12.05pm.

ACT Health was conducting a risk assessment and contact tracing to determine which people were exposed to the virus.

In the meantime, anyone who attended the site at the exposure times has been asked to stay home until they get further advice on Friday.

"If you dropped your child at Ainslie School and did not enter the premises, you are not considered to have attended the school and do not need to stay home," the letter said.

ACT Health confirmed a COVID-19 case was on site at the school while unknowingly infectious.

"ACT Health is working with the Education Directorate on a risk assessment to identify and contact any individuals who were at the location and considered to be a contact," a spokesperson said.

"Affected areas will undergo deep cleaning and any operational impacts will be managed by the school.

"ACT Health has not been notified of any other COVID-19 exposures occurring at ACT schools this week."

The positive case comes in the same week that preschool, kindergarten, year 1, 2, 6, 9 and 10 students were allowed to return to campus after Canberra's lockdown.

On Thursday the ACT reported eight new cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday.

There were 10 people hospitalised with the virus, seven of whom were in intensive care, with five requiring ventilation.

The new cases bring the active total to 258, while the total number of cases associated with this outbreak now stands at 1625.
