Lockerbie Primary was closed to pupils this week after a Covid-19 outbreak.
The Glasgow Road facility was forced to shut on Monday after council chiefs received confirmation of a positive coronavirus test.
A member of staff at the school - which had remained open for vulnerable youngsters and the children of key workers - contracted the disease, it has been revealed.
Dumfries and Galloway Council announced that the school will remain closed for all age groups until Monday, February 8. Lockerbie Academy, the town’s nursery and learning centre are unaffected.
Lockerbie councillor Adam Wilson said it is important that current restrictions are observed to cut cases.
He told the Standard: “The new variant of Covid that is now the predominant strain in Scotland is more transmissible. There’s more chance of people catching this variant and it’s really important that everybody follows the current restrictions that are in place to protect lives.”
Mr Wilson added: “I have been calling on the local NHS board and national government to roll out further testing. There are a number of people who are required to go to work and I would be very keen to see routine testing being rolled out.
“Lockerbie Primary has been shut due to a case and Test and Protect have gone in, so it’s important to test as many people as possible. There are lot of key workers who are still required to go to work, supermarket staff, teachers.
“ I think we should be looking at doing everything we can to build capacity.”
A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “On Monday, February 1 we received confirmation from our colleagues in Public Health of a positive Covid-19 case at Lockerbie Primary School. The confirmed case relates to a member of staff.
“Trace and Protect processes have been initiated and close contacts have been identified. Public Health has prepared a letter which has been sent by our group call system to the pupils’ parents.
“The affected people have been asked to self-isolate at home until February 7 and advised that they can return to school on Monday 8.”
He added: “As a result of the number of staff who are isolating, Lockerbie Primary will have to close until Monday, February 8.
“The head teacher has asked families that require child care this week to make direct contact.
“She is speaking to cluster schools to arrange for placements for these children for the remainder of week.”
