Positive coronavirus cases in the UK hit 1,000 for fifth consecutive day

More than 1,000 new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the UK in the last 24 hours.

Saturday's total of 1,012 means it's the fifth consecutive day that the number of people who have tested positive for the virus has hit the 1k mark.

It brings the number of confirmed cases in the UK to 317,379.

This is a fall of 429 from Friday's figure - which had been the highest daily increase in positive coronavirus cases since June 14.

A further three people who tested positive for coronavirus in the last 28 days have also died.

This brings the death toll to 41,361 from 41,358 at the same point yesterday.

That includes people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in hospitals as well as the wider community.

The Department of Health began publishing the number of daily deaths again on Wednesday after an absence of nearly a month.

This was because Health Secretary Matt Hancock ordered an urgent review into how the number of deaths from coronavirus is calculated by Public Health England.

Following the results of the review, the Department of Health reduced the death toll by more than 5,000.

Previous government figures had said 46,706 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

The DHSC said the change came after the UK government and devolved administrations agreed to publish the number of deaths that have occurred within 28 days of a positive lab-confirmed Covid test result each day.

Previously ,deaths were included for anyone who had died following a positive coronavirus test at any point.
