Positive coronavirus case linked to Hamilton primary school

A member of the school community at a Hamilton primary has tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents and carers of youngsters at Glenlee Primary School and Hamilton School for the Deaf were noticed by letter last Friday evening.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “We continue to work closely with NHS Lanarkshire, which leads on the handling of all cases where Covid-19 is suspected or confirmed.

“As explained in a letter from NHS Lanarkshire to parents and carers, the evidence from NHS Test and Protect does not suggest that transmission of the virus in school has taken place. Following a thorough assessment by NHS Public Health, the risk to the wider school community remains low and so the school will remain open as normal.

“All appropriate action has been taken and information on this has been relayed to all parents, carers and staff. We can further reassure parents, carers, pupils and staff that enhanced cleaning will continue to be carried out at the school.”

NHS Lanarkshire’s Test and Protect team have since been carrying out contacting tracing after an individual tested positive for Covid-19.

Dr John Logan, NHS Lanarkshire consultant in public health medicine, said: “NHS Lanarkshire’s Test and Protect team has carried out contact tracing after a person who attends Glenlee Primary School tested positive for Covid-19.

“They are currently self-isolating at home along with their household members.

“NHS Lanarkshire is working closely with South Lanarkshire Council with regards to the case and has contacted all close contacts. Public health advice has been given to these individuals and they are being told to self-isolate along with their household members.

“The risk to the wider school community is currently low and the school will remain open as normal.”
