'Posh' Gogglebox star Giles Wood reveals surprising childhood background

Gogglebox's Giles Wood and Mary Killen are generally thought of as two of the posher stars to appear on the show, but Giles has recently revealed some surprising information about his background.

Despite speaking with a clipped, Queen's English accent, it transpires that Giles grew up not in one of the home counties, but in Stoke-on-Trent, where his father owned a fireplace business.

"It was sold to support my father’s lifestyle – and his mistress," Giles said of the business, according to Stoke-on-Trent Live.

He is also thought to be related to the founders of Wood & Sons, a pottery firm dating back to the 18th century.

Wood later went to the independent Shrewsbury school and lived in Keele, before attending Wimbledon School of Art, where he met Mary. The couple now live in Wiltshire, where Giles works as an artist and Mary as a journalist.

The former's humble(-ish) beginnings haven't stopped the pair from infiltrating high society, though - they are friends with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his sister Rachel, even holidaying with Boris.

Giles has also painted for Lord Marland, the former treasurer of the Conservative party.

In other news about Gogglebox, the 17th series continued with episode two on Friday, but Mary and Marina were still missing from the show.
