Posh gets Ugly

While her husband David tried to turn round the fortunes of the England football team last night, Victoria Beckham was trying to make a mark of her own in More 4's Ugly Betty.

After an energetic but wooden performance in the Spiceworld movie and her leaden attempt to launch a chatshow, expectations must have been high that Posh's US TV comedy debut would be a catastrophe. The show's build-up, with Marc gushing "Oh my goodness! It's Perfect Spice", seemed to set her up for failure.

In the event, she approached the task with gusto, sending herself up in a series of TV reports charting her rise up the New York hierarchy. Headlines trumpeting "The Beckhams are our leaders now!" neatly satirised her attempts to conquer Hollywood.

The scriptwriters certainly helped, giving her minimal dialogue in favour of a series of sultry poses for the press, and her final fate, locked in a cupboard by Wilhelmina, seemed apt. And Posh certainly looked more like she was enjoying herself than in the excruciating Tesco Christmas ads.

As the Guardian's Lucy Mangan writes today: "Those who remember - or, more accurately, those who cannot forget, no matter how many pills they take - her fellow Spice Girl Geri Halliwell's painful cameo in Sex and the City were braced for the worst, but in the event she acquitted herself quite well. The writers sensibly kept her part mostly pout-based and wrote the jokes around her, with televisions stationed in the background of every scene trumpeting another Posh conquest."

So, in Marc's words, did Posh make you "tingle"?
