Portugal and France are both through to the last-16 of Euro 2020 but not without a night of high drama as the group stage drew to a close.
Former Real Madrid teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema exchanged braces, Ronaldo’s pair of penalties first opening the scoring and then earning a point for his side after Benzema’s strikes either side of half-time had seen the world champions edge ahead.
At various stages of the evening, Portugal occupied every position in the group, with Germany trailing Hungary in Munich but eventually salvaging a 2-2 draw to also qualify for the knockout stage.
The result in Budapest meant France go through as unbeaten winners in Group F on five points, with Portugal finishing third, level with Germany on four points, but behind Joachim Low’s side on head-to-head after their 4-2 defeat on Saturday.
France’s reward is a meeting with Switzerland, while Portugal face the unenviable task of taking on world No1 Belgium.
