It’s already do or die for Aidy Boothroyd and his England U21 side as far as their European Championship hopes are concerned.
The Young Lions suffered a humiliating group stage exit two years ago, when they took just one point from their three games, and are faced with the prospect of a similar fate this time around, having lost their opening game 1-0 to Switzerland earlier this week.
That result has left Boothroyd’s men little margin for error as they face Portugal in their second group stage fixture, with defeat not an option and victory needed to enhance their chances of reaching the knockout stages - which won’t be held until the end of the club season as part of a new split-tournament format.
Boothroyd has promised a more attacking display from his men after they struggled to create chances against a solid Swiss defence last time out.
