Portugal reopens for tourists today as they list all the requirements to get in

Portugal has opened to tourists from most European countries from today.

Like many countries, Portugal closed their borders following months of restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Travellers from European Union countries with coronavirus rates below 500 cases per 100,000 residents can make “all types of visits to Portugal, including even non-essential visits."

However, the Portuguese government has said that restrictions - limited to essential trips - would be maintained for five EU countries; Cyprus, Croatia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Visitors from Brazil, India and South Africa to Portugal are also subject to higher scrutiny.

Visitors to Portugal have to show proof of a negative test taken up to 72 hours before a flight. Airlines will be fined between €500 and €2,000 for each passenger who boards without presenting proof of a negative test.

Last week, Britain added Portugal to a "green" list of foreign destinations a week ago, allowing British citizens to travel there without needing to quarantine for Covid-19 when returning home.

This move will boost Portugal's tourism industry, given their reliance on British holidaymakers to the country.

Plans for the EU's digital travel cert will be discussed by MEPs and the European Commission this week.

As stated on the website of The Department of Foreign Affairs: "Anyone considering travel to Portugal should check the latest information from the local authorities regarding requirements for international passengers arriving in the country.

A “State of Calamity” entered into force in Portugal on 1 May, and different regions of Portugal have varying levels of restrictions according to the level of risk in municipalities. Portuguese Government information on these restrictions and levels of risk for each municipality, including Portimao are available here

Portugal is currently easing previous lockdown measures in accordance with its 4-phase Deconfinement Plan. More information can be found here.
