Portugal remains on coronavirus quarantine list for holidaymakers from England

Holidaymakers hoping to head to Portugal will have to wait longer following the latest list of exempted countries issued by the UK Government.

It is not included in the latest bulletin of quarantine-free nations, which take effect in England from July 28.

Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia and St Vincent and the Grenadines have been added to the list of countries where travellers do not need to quarantine on their return.

The Portuguese government and tourism authorities had been pressing for British holidaymakers to get the go-ahead to visit the country's resorts without the need to self-isolate when returning to the the UK.

The new additions take the number of countries who do not face tarvel restrictions to 80 nations.

But it is a huge blow for Portugal, which is a major destination for British tourists with almost three million UK visitors a year.

However, the government advised people to regularly check the advice in case the situation changes.

It said: "Passengers should continue to protect themselves when considering travelling abroad by making sure they are up to date on the latest information – both at home and at their destination.

“Government will update GOV.UK with any changes on a weekly basis (should any be required) to reflect the shifting international health picture."
