Portugal holiday boost as Scots tourists no longer need to quarantine on return

Travellers from Portugal to Scotland no longer have to quarantine as of Saturday, Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf has said.

Portugal's government expressed anger when the country was placed on the quarantine list when it was created at the beginning of July.

But the country's number of cases dropped in the past week to 14.38 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 15 per 100,000 the week before - and has not been over 20 per 100,000 since the week of 15-22 July.

The news comes as Austria, Croatia, Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago were added to the quarantine list.

This means anyone travelling from those countries to Scotland will need to self-isolate for 14 days.

Scotland was the only nation of the UK to add Switzerland to its quarantine list.

A 'significant rise in the number of cases of coronavirus ' is to blame for the new restrictions, according to Yousaf.

"We cannot emphasise enough that if people choose to travel abroad, they must be aware that quarantine requirements may change while they are away," he said.

"The same can be said for the rules within the country or territory people are travelling to.

"If people do travel from any country that is not exempt from the requirements, they will be required to quarantine for 14 days on return, please check the Scottish Government website for more information on what this means."

He added: "As I have said previously, we do not make these decisions lightly, but suppressing the virus and protecting public health is vital."
