Portugal could be taken off travel ban red list today, say reports

Portugal could be taken off the red list of countries banned for UK travel from today, according to reports.

The Westminster Government has a list of countries seen as being at high risk of Covid and new Covid variants - including Portugal.

Anyone coming into the UK from those countries currently has to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days, rather than being allowed to quarantine at home.

Even once Portugal is taken off the list holidays will not be allowed, as the rules in the UK currently ban international travel except for essential reasons.

But it could indicate that holidays in Portugal may be allowed soon, reports The Telegraph.

The Portuguese government says it wants to reopen to tourists in mid-May - with Brits who have been vaccinated allowed in.

Travel rules in the UK are under review and will be updated from April 12, with the possibility foreign travel for holidays from England could be allowed from May 17.

Portugal was one of the first of the 33 countries put on the red list in February.

That was because of its links to Brazil - home of one of the mutant strains of Covid now in the UK.
