Portugal could be back on quarantine list 'within days' as cases soar

Portugal is expected to return to the UK's quarantine list after the country's number of cases exceeded the acceptable limit.

In the last week, the country has reported 21.1 cases per 100,000 people, creating serious concern for those travelling back into Scotland from the area.

In recent weeks both France and Spain have been re-added to the list after their daily figures both saw a large surge in transmission.

This now means that anyone returning to the UK from there must self isolate for 14 days upon arrival.

A seven-day rate of 20 is the threshold above which the UK Government considers triggering quarantine conditions.

However, the move to add Portugal back to the list has been argued against by the boss of British Airways after he stated it would cause. further "chaos and hardship".

Writing in The Times, Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group, said: "Another U-turn by the Government, adding Portugal to the quarantine list, will cause further chaos and hardship for travellers."

He said the "ever-shifting list" of countries requiring quarantine means "the UK has officially hung up the 'Closed' sign".

Mr Walsh said: "The Government is using arbitrary statistics to effectively ban 160 countries and in the process destroying the economy.

"The Government needs to introduce a testing regime to restore confidence."
