Portstewart promenade closed after flash flood caused road to 'crumble'

Motorists are being asked to avoid the Portstewart Promenade as flash flooding on Sunday caused structural damage to the road.

Drivers were forced to turn around to avoid huge pools of water in the road as the surface appeared to "swell up and crumble" due to the storm on July 4.

There is currently only limited access for drivers in the area and it is expected that the road will reopen by the end of the week.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: "Roadworks are ongoing on Portstewart Promenade due to structural damage caused by adverse weather yesterday (Sunday 4 July).

"There is limited access to vehicles, however pedestrians can still access local businesses in the area.

"Please be advised that the road is expected to reopen by Friday (9 July)."

The Met Office have now issued a yellow weather warning for Monday, July 5 with "slow moving heavy, occasionally thundery, showers will give a risk of flooding this afternoon and early evening".

It covers the majority of Northern Ireland, apart from the Armagh and Newry areas, and is forecast to last from 11am to 8pm.
