Portstewart fire tackled by crews as smoke billows across seaside town

Fire crews are currently at the scene of a blaze in the Winston Drive area of Portstewart this afternoon.

Large plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing above houses and across the beach on the popular seaside town.

It is understood that members of the fire service, who received a report at approximately 2.30pm on May 25, are continuing to tackle the blaze in the town.

A spokesperson for the NI Fire and Rescue Service said that five appliances, including two from Coleraine, two from Portrush and one from Portstewart, are currently tackling the fire.

One Command Support Unit is also at the scene of the incident that involves two semi-detached bungalows.

Randy McComb from the NIFRS said: "We received a report on Monday, May 25 to a fire in the Winston Drive area of Portstewart.

"The fire, which has spread to both roof spaces and also involves an oil tanker, is currently being seen to by members of the fire service.

"The incident is ongoing."

Local councillor for the area, Alderman Mark Fielding, told Belfast Live: "I am pleased that everyone involved has managed to get out and are now safe from any threat of the fire.

"It appears now that the fire service are continuing to tackle the blaze and local police have said that everything is under control."
